An attempt at absurd, surreal comics without typical jokes and punchlines, instead relying on self-references where the panels and speech bubbles play some sort of active role in the comic. It can be that new characters jump out of thought bubbles to interact with the characters outside, sometimes a character will hand another character his speech bubble, that sort of thing.
